AREA MANAGER NAMED: Jeri V. Smith has been named area manager of Commonwealth Gas Services in Portsmouth.
Smith succeeds Richard Schlagheck who was transferred to Fredericksburg.
Smith, a 15-year employee of the gas company, previously was area manager for Columbia Gas of Ohio in Ashland, Ohio.
She attended Franklin University in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, before going to work as a drafting technician for the gas company. She subsequently was lead transportation coordinator in the Columbus office before being named area manager at Oberlin, Ohio, in 1990. In 1992, she moved to Ashland as area manager.
In Ashland, she was a member of the Rotary Club, Lorain County Urban League Board of Directors, the Black Women's Leadership Caucus and Ashland University Women's Development Committee. She was active in the United Way campaign and co-adviser of the Black Student Union at Ashland University.
Columbia Gas distribution companies, including Commonwealth, provide natural gas service in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
SHOPS GET A NAME: A strip of shops and offices on Chowan Drive just off Airline Boulevard has a name now: Chowan Plaza Shoppes.
The center is owned by Stephen and Kathleen Carson who operate Katy's D'Lites Health Food Store and Stylecrest Beauty Salon, which has been in business 40 years.
