All gill nets which stretch mesh of less than five inches placed in the Pamlico, Pungo, Neuse and Bay rivers must be attended at all times, according to restrictions announced this week by Bob Jamieson, interim director of the state Division of Marine Fisheries.
Effective immediately, fishermen must be within 100 yards at all times of the gill net sets placed in those coastal waters and tributaries, Jamieson said.
These restrictions apply to small-mesh gill nets placed in the Pamlico and Pungo rivers west of lower Reed Hammock and Currituck Point, Bay River west of Bay Point and Maw Point, and the Neuse River west of Cockle Point and Sandy Point.
Jamieson said the restrictions were designed to protect young red drum and striped bass.
In late 1993, the division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stocked more than 110,000 striped bass, averaging six inches, in the Pamlico and Pungo rivers. by CNB
