A Norfolk man pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the slaying last year of 27-year-old Valerie Monroe.
Ryan H. Jones, 25, entered an Alford plea, which allows a defendant to admit no guilt but concedes the evidence was sufficient to win a conviction. Prosecutors agreed not to ask for more than 40 years in prison as part of the agreement. Jones' sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.
Jones was charged with fatally stabbing Monroe in the early hours of Oct. 28, 1993. Monroe, of the 1700 block of Selden Ave., was killed in the 1000 block of Mapole Ave. after an argument.
Jones, of the 2500 block of Keller St., was arrested hours after the stabbing.
