SPARTANETTES' VOLLEYBALL GOAL: SPIKE CIAA OPPONENTS

The Norfolk State volleyball team is looking up this season - way up, in fact, to its first CIAA championship. The Spartanettes came close last season with a 20-9 record for second place in the conference, their best finish. Coach Wilhelmenia Wright-Harrison is counting on six returning starters.

The big question is Kami Jackson, a 5-foot-10 hitter from San Antonio who's on the rebound after a 1993 season marred by injuries. She was a 1992 all-CIAA selection.

Other starters are sophomore Regina Younkin, all-rookie last season, and junior Aricka Spellman, both of Chesapeake; juniors Dianne Harris (all-CIAA), Holly Gray and Kim Mumford.

Sophomore Donnetta Fisher (Virginia Beach) and junior Jametha Johnson (Chesapeake) are among the returnees.

The Spartanettes open the season Saturday in the California (Pa.) Tournament against California and Shippensburg. On Saturday, they will play Lock Haven and Indiana (Pa.) University.

LOOKING BACK: The induction of former William and Mary tackle Lou Creekmur into the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic Hall of Fame at Montgomery, Ala., is a reminder of past football glory days at W&M. Under coach Rube McCray, the Tribe played in the 1947 Dixie Bowl and the 1948 Delta Bowl. The Tribe was led by Creekmur, guard George Hughes, and backs Jack Cloud and Buddy Lex. The four were invited to play in the 1949 Blue-Gray game at Montgomery, Ala.

At W&M, Creekmur, who went on to a brilliant NFL career, was All-Southern Conference (1948) and the winner of the 1950 Jacobs Blocking Trophy. Creekmur was the second player picked in the 1951 NFL draft and played nine years with the Detroit Lions. He was an eight-year All-Pro.

JOB REPORT: Brendan Connor, an assistant basketball coach at W&M last season, has been named to Brian Ellerbe's staff at Loyola College. A former Tribe point guard and team captain, Connor ranks second in W&M career assists (358), third in 3-pointers (88) and fourth in steals (128). Connor joins former Old Dominion assistant Herb Krusen on the Greyhounds' staff. . . . Former Hampden-Sydney basketball standout Dee Vick, who was the team captain last season, has been added to the Tiger athletic staff as head cross country and assistant basketball coach.

ODAC UPDATE: A 15-minute highlight film of Old Dominion Athletic Conference football is scheduled for TV showing on Home Team Sports, according to ODAC commissioner Dan Wooldridge. . . . Roanoke College, the defending ODAC men's soccer champion, is No. 6 in the NCAA preseason poll, the Maroons' highest ranking ever. Virginia Wesleyan is ranked 11th. Although Division III player of the year Dustin Fonder and four-time all-Region Nelson Vasquez are departed, Roanoke still returns nine starters. by CNB
