DARE NAMES COORDINATOR FOR COUNTY'S PUBLIC RELATIONS

Charles Hartig, 48, a veteran journalist who for the past 17 months has been economic development director for Currituck County, was named public relations coordinator for Dare County on Friday.

``Charlie lives in Kitty Hawk, and his familiarity with Dare County and his experience in broadcasting helped make him the strongest applicant,'' County Manager Terry Wheeler said in announcing the appointment.

Fifty people applied for the job, which pays $32,188 a year, Wheeler said.

Dare County has not had a public relations coordinator for two years, but the Board of Commissioners included funds for the position in the current budget.

``We feel we got somebody who can help us tremendously with the media and with the residents of Dare County,'' Wheeler said.

Hartig said he was excited about the chance to work with officials in Dare County ``because this is where it's happening in eastern North Carolina.''

``It was hard to leave Currituck County because I liked working with the county manager, Bill Richardson, and I was proud of the progress we had made in broadening the tax base.

``I also enjoyed the achievements we had made with the restoration of the Whalehead Club, but this offer was just something I could not turn down.''

The Whalehead Club, a luxurious hunting lodge in Corolla built nearly three-quarters of a century ago, is being restored as a tourist attraction.

``Dare County's gain is our loss,'' Richardson said. ``Charlie has done a good job in trying to bring new business and industry into the county, and he has worked hard on the Whalehead Club project, helping to make it a tourist destination.''

Hartig was a radio and television journalist for years in Hampton Roads, and worked as a journalist in Currituck before taking the job with the county, where he was making $29,833 a year. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
