THREE MEN DIE IN SEPARATE NORFOLK INCIDENTS ONE VICTIM WAS A FORMER MEMBER OF A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM AT THE BEACH.

A former Virginia Beach athlete, who played on two Bayside High School state championship teams, was one of three men who died in separate incidents Friday morning, police said.

The body of Warrenton Parker, 21, was found just before 7 a.m. in an alley off the 2700 block of Azalea Garden Road at the Lansdale Apartments. Police were investigating the death of Parker, who lived in that block, as a homicide.

During his junior and senior years, Parker was a guard when the Marlins basketball team took back-to-back state championships in 1990 and 1991. He averaged 5.6 points per game.

Parker also was a starting quarterback for Bayside's football team. In 1991, his best season, he passed for 1,116 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Ron Jenkins, basketball coach at Bayside, said Parker was an outstanding player.

And ``he was very capable academically,'' Jenkins said. ``He was a very typical kid. . . . Some days he did well and some days he didn't. I think he was definitely one of our outstanding players.''

``He wasn't a big scorer, but he handled the ball well. He definitely had a knack for basketball.''

Parker was very close to his parents, and they came to quite a few games, Jenkins said.

Parker's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.

Earlier Friday morning, about 1:10 a.m., paramedics responding to a call at the intersection of Godfrey Avenue and East Princess Anne Road found an unidentified black male barely breathing and suffering from a severe head injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 10 minutes later; his body was taken to the medical examiner's office.

An investigation is continuing. Police say they are looking for three male suspects.

Four hours later, a man was found dead in the street after he was thrown from a car in the 1000 block of Oaklawn Ave. Investigators could not identify him.

The three deaths brought Norfolk's murder total to 49 so far this year, police spokesman Larry Hill said.
