GRANBY'S KING REIGNS IN VICTORY QUARTERBACK'S TD RUNS OF 58 AND 73 YARDS KEY 22-19 WIN VS. SCRAPPY WILSON.

No, you haven't stepped back in time. But at first glance the 1994 Anthony King-led Granby Comets could be mistaken for the 1991 Pete Allen-led squad.

King is noted for his quick feet and quick thinking and both helped Granby down Wilson, 22-19, in the season-opener for both teams Friday at Chittum Field.

``They (Allen and King) are almost carbon copies of one another,'' Granby coach Dave Hudak said.

The Comets' plan is to run a lot of option plays and turn loose King, a junior quarterback. Friday, King got loose for 137 yards on 13 carries with touchdown runs of 58 and 73 yards against the Presidents.

He also had a scoring run of 79 yards called back because of a clipping penalty, and was 5-for-10 passing for 49 yards.

``I just did what I had to do,'' King said.

That included the game-winning touchdown with 5:05 to play.

Wilson had taken a 19-14 lead on freshman quarterback Terrence Winston's 1-yard pass to Dontea Scarborough with 5:25 remaining.

It took King one play to respond.

He escaped down the left side, hurdled Darrius Edwards at the 2 and scrambled into the end zone for a 58-yard score. King completed the 2-point conversion with a pass to Mack Hall and Granby had a 22-19 lead.

Wilson, 2-8 last season, gave Granby a surprisingly tough time.

Granby was on the lookout for a lot of passing from Winston, so when the Comets effectively shut that down, Winston started handing the ball off to Darryl Scott.

Scott rushed for 101 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown in the first half to give Wilson a 7-6 lead. He finished with 141 yards.

``Their running game gave us fits,'' Hudak said. ``They really came at us with a balanced attack.''

When King wasn't looking for holes himself, he was perfectly executing fake rushes on handoffs to Anthony Brown, who usually managed to get at least four or five yards before anyone realized that King no longer had the ball.

``We have been working on it a lot in practice and it just came together out there today,'' King said.

The Comets capitalized on a Scott fumble when King gave to Brown five straight times en route to a third-quarter touchdown. King hooked up with Hall for the conversion and Granby had the lead back, 14-7.

Winston finished the day 11-of-22 for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as well as some impressive scrambling. ``I thought he did a real good job out there,'' Wilson coach Jensen Baker said. ``He did a lot of scrambling and had that key pass during the drive that gave us the lead.''

On third and nine from his own 44, Winston evaded four tackles and connected with Scarborough on the Granby 17. Two plays later he found Scarborough again in the end zone for the 19-14 edge in the fourth. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by RICHARD L. DUNSTON/
