George Newton ``Newt'' Powers Sr., 88, a longtime resident of the Cradock Community, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 1994, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Powers was a native of Illinois. He was the widower of Mildred V. Powers and had retired from N.N.S.Y. and was a retired life insurance agent for New York Life after 40 years. He was a member of Cradock Presbyterian Church and was elder emeritus and choir member for over 50 years. He was also a member of the T.A. Russell Bible Class and was instrumental in it's continuation after Dr. Russell's death. He was music director of the class for over 35 years.
Survivors include three sons, George N. Powers Jr. of Portsmouth, Thomas V. Powers of Virginia Beach and Robert L. Powers Sr. of Chesapeake; three sisters, Florence Mann and Thirza McLauchlin, both of Chesapeake and Elenor Osborne of Hampton; six grandchildren, Heather Powers Russo, Robert Powers Jr., Stephen Powers, Brian Powers, Vandolyn Powers and Lee Moore; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cradock Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard W. Lovingood and Dr. Tom Powers. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Major Repair Fund of Cradock Presbyterian Church.
