ODU LAUNCHES FIELD HOCKEY CAMPAIGN WITH 4-0 VICTORY

St. Joseph's never had a chance.

Well, actually, it had two. But twice, the relentless Old Dominion defense turned the Hawks away as the Monarchs won, 4-0, in Sunday's field hockey opener at Foreman Field.

The Monarchs (1-0) allowed St. Joseph's (0-1) only two scoring opportunities, while ODU managed 23 shots on goal and nine penalty corners.

``We've started,'' said ODU coach Beth Anders. ``We're out of the gate.''

The No. 2-ranked Monarchs dominated the first half at the net and allowed the Hawks just the final six seconds of the half for their total offensive possession. However, time ran out before the Hawks could execute their one and only penalty corner of the game.

Though ODU failed to capitalize on seven first-half corners, the Monarchs set up their first goal when Sue Dano's failed attempt with 15:53 remaining was deflected off St. Joe's defender Krissy Holak.

Holak took Dano's bullet shot off the leg, which matched Sam Salvia one-on-one with keeper Joan Fedesco for the game's sole penalty stroke. Salvia lifted the ball just past Fedesco into the right side of the goal.

A more relaxed ODU team graced the field in the second half and quickly went to work on Fedesco, who had 17 saves on the day.

At the 53:26 mark, Heather Simon found Alaina Hunt for ODU's second goal. Hunt caught Fedesco out of position, reversed her stick and drove the ball through Fedesco's legs.

Karen Neiss made it 3-0 when she turned a loose ball into a score with 6:12 minutes remaining. Simon capped the scoring, netting a goal with 57 seconds to go.

The Hawks' desperation offense got them inside the circle just once in the second half. But the shot was knocked out by ODU keeper Kim Decker.

``St. Joe's played hard,'' Anders said. ``They competed. We had our chances in the first half, but we got anxious and excited. In the second half, we settled down. There are a lot of positive things we can take out of this.''

The Monarchs visit Radford at 1 p.m. Saturday.
