LORD HELP VIRGINIANS

There once was a time I could say ``I am a Virginian'' with pride.

Now that Virginia is too often defined by spokesmen of the radical right, it is difficult to maintain pride in Virginia. These individuals use the bully pulpit to condemn, vilify and slander all who do not embrace their narrow beliefs.

Religion has naught to do with their rantings. In fact, I believe Falwell and Robertson have besmirched and degraded the meaning of Christianity.

Where are those sane Virginians who in the past supported leaders for their worthy achievements and logical minds?

Have Virginians stooped so low that they need follow those who wrap themselves in the American flag and polish their halos of self-proclaimed righteousness while filling their coffers and piling up ostentatious wealth? Does this benefit Virginia or themselves?

If all of this does not disgust one enough, we are now asked to vote in November for a self-proclaimed hero, a convicted felon and a proven liar.

What, I pray, has become of Virginians' plain common sense?
