Wayne McCauley Gersen, 71, of Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 1994, in a Norfolk hospital.
Born in Germantown, Pa., he was a graduate of Swarthmore (Pa.) High School and Drexel Institute of Technology. He served as a first lieutenant in the Navy in World War II. After the war, he worked briefly for American Viscose before starting a 37 year career with E.I. DuPont in 1947. With DePont, he worked as a salesman, sales and management trainer and sales manager in the Petro-Chemical, Employee Relations and Industrial and Bio-Chemical divisions.
In all communities where he lived, Mr. Gersen sang in the church choirs and community choruses, was active in community life and worked to improve the quality of life for all. In Southern Shores, where he resided following his retirement, Mr. Gersen was elected to the Town Council, served on the Tourist Board and attended and was active in the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Duck Woods Country Club, S.C.O.R.E., the Nags Head Fishing Club and the Outer Banks Barber Shop Chorus.
Mr. Gersen is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret M. Gersen; two sons, Dr. Wayne F. Gersen of Boonsboro, Md., and Geoffrey M. Gersen of Clifton Park, N.Y.; two daughters, the Rev. Margaret G. Connor of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Ellen G. Hughes of Geneva, Ill.; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Gersen is also survived by his foster brother, James S. Jackson of Hendersonville.
A memorial service will be held at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. L. Spottswood Graves. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church Capital Fund, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. 27948.
