Gary Ray DeVane, 43, of Norfolk, a former manager with C & P Telephone Co. in Norfolk, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 1994, at his home in Alexandria.
He graduated from Granby High School and attended the University of North Carolina.
Mr. DeVane was a member of the Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian Institution. He was a progressive thinker and supported several organizations that defended human rights.
He is survived by his partner of over 21 years, Hunter Gordon of Alexandria, Va.; his sister, Constance D. Hess of Virginia Beach; and his brother, William N. DeVane Jr. of Marathon, Fla.
A memorial service for Mr. DeVane will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, on the corner of Grace and Yarmouth Streets on the Hague.
Flowers would be appreciated, but for those who prefer donations may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association Community Hospice of Northern Virginia, 2775 South Quincy St., Suite 260, Arlington, Va. 22206. Friends of the family are invited to meet at the residence of his sister, Constance Hess, 1402 Sycamore Road in Virginia Beach following the service.
