JOHN E. SMITH

John Edward Smith, Lt. Cmdr., USN (Ret.), 48, of Manassas and formerly of Virginia Beach, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 1994, at his home.

Mr. Smith was past president and fire officer of Coles District Fire Department, Manassas, where he was a member for the past five years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served 28 years, and received many awards including the Meritorious Unit Commendation and Tomahawk Strike Warfare. He mustanged from seaman to lieutenant commander in the years he served with the Navy and helped write the weapon systems manuals used by the Navy today. His impact and input for the Navy will be seen in the future.

Survivors include his wife, Lodeen R. Smith; two sons, Tim S. Smith and Jude Smith, both of Manassas; three brothers, Roland Smith, Richard Smith and Joseph Smith, all of Philadelphia; one sister, Johann Collins of Philadelphia; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in Quantico Marine Memorial Chapel, Quantico, with Father James Moran and Lt. Cmdr. Steve Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at Coles District Fire Department, 13712 Dumfries Road, Manassas, Va., immediately following the service. Lee Funeral Home, Manassas, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to American Heart Association, 8735 Plantation Lane, Manassas, Va. 22110 in memory of John F. Smith.
