Groups in nine coastal counties are among 99 organizations that have applied for more than $12.6 million in Family Resource Center grants, part of the state's new crime-fighting program approved by the General Assembly earlier this year.
Organizations in Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Martin, Northampton, Perquimans and Washington counties are vying for about $875,000 of $2 million available for local crime-fighting programs.
Up to 25 programs statewide are expected to receive grants this year, said Micheline Ridley Malson, director of the Division of Family Development, which oversees the grants.
The Family Resource Center program, part of Gov. James B. Hunt's crime-fighting package that was approved by the General Assembly in this spring's emergency session on crime, will provide support services to families and children at one-stop centers for family services, Malson said.
Some of the centers will also begin shifting families from welfare, helping them find and keep jobs and move toward economic self-sufficiency, she said. by CNB
