IVERSON CLEARED TO JOIN HOYAS

Allen Iverson has enrolled at Georgetown and will be eligible to play basketball immediately, coach John Thompson has announced.

``Allen Iverson is admitted and is enrolled at Georgetown University,'' Thompson said in a statement. ``We are glad he is here and eligible to participate immediately.''

Iverson, who led Hampton's Bethel High to state titles in basketball and football in 1992-93, received his high school degree last week from Richard Milburn High, an alternative school for troubled youth. He enrolled at Milburn after his release from the Newport News City Farm, where he served nearly four months for his role in a February 1993 brawl in a Hampton bowling center.

To meet NCAA requirements for freshman eligibility, Iverson had to earn at least a 2.0 grade-point average and meet a minimum score on either the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the American College Test.

Classes at Georgetown began last Wednesday, but Iverson took advantage of late registration, Thompson said.

Iverson, a 6-foot guard, was considered the nation's top high school player before his arrest. He returned to organized basketball for the first time in more than a year last month and scored 100 points in three games at the Kenner League on the Georgetown campus. by CNB
