HAMPTON ROOKIE PROVES THAT HE STILL CAN RAMBLE

Playing in his first football game in nearly three years, Lamonte Still showed Saturday that he still has it.

Still, a Hampton freshman, rushed for 101 yards on 15 carries in the Pirates' 24-15 victory over Morehouse. He also caught three passes for 12 yards and scored two touchdowns.

It was his first game since his senior year at Cox High in 1991.

And only half-a-game at that.

``The amazing thing about it all is we rotated a lot of people and he only played two quarters,'' Hampton coach Joe Taylor said.

Still split time with junior Malcolm Benson, playing the first and third quarters. But he was grateful for every carry. ``It felt pretty good, real good, being on the field again and not watching from the sidelines,'' Still said.

Still, the Tidewater Player of the Year in 1992, signed with Virginia but left school after one semester. He transferred to Hampton and sat out last season. He was expected to make an immediate splash, but said he surprised himself Saturday.

``I was just trying to go out there and perform,'' Still said. ``I didn't know I had 100 yards.

Taylor said Still's performance convinced him of one thing: ``We don't have to rotate that position anymore.''

UPSET CITY: Livingstone's new coach, Rudy Abrams, confesses that he doesn't know much about the CIAA. So forgive him if he didn't know that his team wasn't supposed to beat Fayetteville State.

Fayetteville was picked fourth in the conference, Livingstone was picked last. But the Bears won, 9-0, in Abrams' college coaching debut.

``With my being new, I'm not sure what to expect from different teams,'' Abrams said. ``It was one of those things where you prepare as best you can.''

Abrams prepared the Bears well, especially on defense, where they held Fayetteville to 40 yards rushing, on 31 carries.

Next up: Virginia Union.

``I'm real pleased, but we're taking it one step at a time,'' Abrams said. ``We think we took a step in the right direction.''

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: Still's performance earned him conference newcomer-of-the-week honors. Bo Morgan, who piled up 158 yards rushing on Norfolk State, was named offensive back of the week. Bowie State's Chris Banks, who had three interceptions in a 13-0 win over Elizabeth City, was defensive back of the week. by CNB
