Members of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany figure the cost of putting on their 75th anniversary in June 1996 is going to be about $4,000.
With only about 100 church members, that's a hefty price tag for the small Lafayette Boulevard congregation to bear. So, beginning this fall, the parish will sponsor a series of fund-raising activities organizers hope will bring current and former church members together for fun and profit.
They're going on trips.
``We want big things for our anniversary,'' said program director, Cissy Irby, a member of the church for about 60 years. ``We need to raise more money than we can from bake sales.''
The church's first trip is set for Oct. 11. Participants will tour historical sites in Edenton, N.C., and the restored plantation, Sommerset Place at Cresswell. Cost for the bus trip is $53.
Other trips include a tour of Majorie Merriweather Post's Washington, D.C., estate, Hillwood (Nov. 15); a holiday progressive dinner and tours of the White House and Smithsonian Institution (Dec. 7-8). Cost for the trips vary.
More trips are planned for next spring, as well as spaghetti dinners, bingo games and a pig picking.
``We're hoping we'll be able to reach more of our former members by doing fun things that will bring them back to the church,'' said Irby. In recent years, ``people have left the church and spread out all over the area. We want to bring them home for our anniversary.''
The church, located at the corner of Lafayette Boulevard and Versailles Avenue, will celebrate its anniversary in the summer of 1996 with a special worship service, guest speakers, a commemorative dinner and other festivities.
