The Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners will have plenty of choices when it fills a vacancy on the board.
Eight applicants are under consideration for the seat left vacant by the unexpected death earlier this summer of Mayor Pro Tem Lacy McNeill.
The board has set Monday as the day it will fill the seat.
The list of possible replacements includes two former members of the commission, a former mayor and four applicants for the most recent vacancy on the council, filled by Lurana Cowan after Terry Gray was elected mayor.
Steve Sawin, Bill Morris, Bill Stover and Neil White sought the vacancy left by Gray's election. Joining the four are Nags Head Police Officer and Kill Devil Hills resident Rex Meads, former commissioner C.E. ``Smokey'' Broughton, North Carolina Aquarium Director Rhett White and former Kill Devil Hills Mayor Joe Deneke.
Deneke served the town as mayor, mayor pro tem and as commissioner. Broughton served for four years on the commission and is active in a number of veterans and civic groups.
Meads, the patrol supervisor in Nags Head, has been with the department since 1985. He has also served as a detective and as a patrolman for the town. Before joining the force he worked in the Elizabeth City Police Department.
Morris is also a law enforcement officer, serving as a deputy with the Dare County Sheriff's Department. He is also an ordained Methodist minister.
Stover, a former president of the Kill Devil Hills Taxpayers Association, is a World War II veteran. Sawin, a former college chemistry professor, is a past president of the taxpayers' group. He teaches science at Camden County High School.
Neil White is a retired Air Force colonel who holds a bachelor's degree from Rochester University and a masters from the University of Southern California.
Rhett White is a former assistant superintendent of Dare County schools and is active in a number of civic and professional organizations. by CNB
