W&L OUT TO SNAP ITS AMPERSAND JINX

Washington & Lee is looking to break an eight-year football jinx when it meets Emory & Henry in Saturday's opener in Lexington, Va.

This is the ninth consecutive year in which the ODAC rivals have met in the opener, with the Wasps winning the last eight.

W&L's hopes are running high with the return of 18 starters from last season's 2-8 team, including All-American defensive tackle Robert Hull.

But that may not be enough. The Wasps, consistently one of the top teams in Divison III's Southern Region over the last decade, are rebuilding but still have the makings of another powerhouse defense.

ODU UPDATE: The Lady Monarchs' cross-country team, under direction of coach Larraine Hochella, open the season Friday in the William and Mary Invitational. Stacy Chyz, the top runner last year in three events, and Christina Barr lead the Lady Monarchs. . . . Junior golfer Chris Krueger, from Wilmington, Del., won the Delaware Open by four strokes with a three-day total of 212. The Monarchs open the fall season with the Kiawah (S.C.) Island Intercollegiate, which begins Monday. . . . The ODU Scholarship Tennis Tournament gets under way Sept. 16-18 with men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The men's and women's singles will be Sept. 30 through Oct. 2. All events will be held at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club. For further information, call 481-7545.

FIELD HOCKEY REPORT: Four Virginia Beach athletes - senior Eileen Arnaldo (Kempsville), sophomore Kelly McDonald (Cox), junior Heather Hoehlein (Cox) and freshman Holly Garriott (Kempsville) - helped sixth-ranked James Madison shut out Wake Forest, 7-0, and Appalachian State, 14-0, in their first two outings. But it'll get tougher for the Dukes this weekend: They play at fourth-ranked Penn State on Friday, then return home Sunday to take on No. 2 Old champion. Penn State opened with 3-0 win over Syracuse. Old Dominion, a 4-0 winner over St. Joseph's, travels to Radford on Saturday before taking on JMU. . . . Longwood, ranked fifth in the Division II coaches' poll, features a strong Virginia Beach contingent. Senior defensive midfielder Ashley Bolden (Cox) started all 15 games last year. Teammates include junior Tiffany Tignor and sophomore Kelly Callan, both from Princess Anne, and sophomore Meredith Blackman and freshman Lori Clark, both from First Colonial. . . . Virginia Wesleyan's young field hockey team includes sophomore Wendy McKay (Kellam) and freshmen Bobbi Losee (First Colonial) and Keri Harrison (Granby).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Freshman striker Amy Rosenbaum, the 1993 Virginian-Pilot/Ledger Star player of the year, is making her mark at Alabama. The former First Colonial star scored the Crimson Tide's second goal in a 2-0 victory over Davidson. Alabama, which is fielding its first women's soccer team since 1988, is off to a 2-0 start, having defeated Appalachian State, 2-0, in its opener. . . . National rankings will be at stake when No. 7 William and Mary hosts No. 5 Notre Dame at 2 p.m. Sunday at Barksdale Field. Whitney Cali, a freshman from Green Run, is getting a lot of playing time for the Tribe, having scored three goals in the first two games. W&M's scoring leader is Jenn Baumann with eight points.

MEN'S SOCCER: Kempsville alumni Billy Owens and Steve Jolley each scored as 19th-ranked William and Mary opened with a 2-0 victory over Colgate. Freshman Wade Barrett (First Colonial) tallied his first collegiate assist when he set up Jolley, the Tribe's leading scorer last year. . . . Virginia tops Soccer America's collegiate top 20, with North Carolina third, Clemson sixth, James Madison ninth and Duke 18th.

FOOTBALL REPORT: Running back Kelvin Walker, a redshirt junior from Lake Taylor, and sophomore linebacker Devon Daniels, a Tallwood grad, figure strongly in Lenior-Rhyne's plans. The Division II Bears, a 23-14 loser to Division I-AA Western Carolina in their opener, loom as contenders in the South Atlantic Conference. . . . Newport News Apprentice School, celebrating 75 years years of football, has a tough one this week at Rowan in Glassboro, N.J. Rowan is the national runner-up in Division III last year. The Builders' local crop include probable starters tight end James Beckett (Booker T. Washington), linebacker Michael Drier (Lakeland), defensive tackle Scott Stone (Western Branch), and defensive back Darryl Green (Kempsville), and freshman prospects Jason Reese (defensive lineman, Oscar Smith) and JeMarr Rivers (linebacker, Wilson). by CNB
