GOING OUT ON A LIMB TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

This is the week I either take a lead or begin my usual sink toward the bottom behind the competition.

While Gary Edwards and the guests are picking the same victors in every game, I'm going out on a limb in a couple of contests to try to make something happen.

If I lose only one, we're still all tied. Lose them both and I start digging a hole. Win them both, and I become hard to live with.

Hey, I deserve the right to brag a little if I get the chance. It's been a long time in coming.

The pick that will make or break me is Ocean Lakes over Cox. Granted, nobody wants to be the first team to lose to the new guys, especially after the new guys lost their opener, 56-0.

The difference will be Dolphins coach Jim Prince's knowledge of the Falcons - his former team.

First Colonial 27, Bayside 24: Fast becoming one of the area's most intense rivalries, this game will be closer than expected, largely because of the Patriots' inexperience at quarterback.

Ocean Lakes 17, Cox 14: Go ahead and call me crazy. Who could pick the Dolphins to win after suffering a 56-0 defeat in their opener? Well, Ocean Lakes showed some potential last week - and with the addition of former Kellam veteran Don Lauzon on offense and defense - the team should improve enough to slide by with a victory.

Green Run 35, Maury 17: This one could easily be more lopsided. If the Stallions get their explosive offense in gear, look for lots of highlight film material.

Norview 21, Kellam 17: It has only been two weeks since the Knights were forced to restructure their game because returning two-way senior Lauzon jumped ship for Ocean Lakes - essentially meaning Kellam hasn't had enough practice for the Pilots.

Kempsville 28, Great Bridge 3: The Wildcats failed to punch anything in against Tallwood's defense, and the Chiefs' defensive coordinator tells us that this could be one of the best Kempsville defenses in a long time.

Last week: 3-0.

Best pick: Princess Anne 35, Ocean Lakes 0. Princess Anne won, 56-0, but held a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Worst pick: none.

Overall: 3-0. by CNB
