WOMEN TRY THEIR LUCK AT PICKING THE WINNERS

For three of the past four years, Margaret Merritt and Kelly Gregory have been in charge of hospitality for the East Coast Surfing Championships - serving the judges and the hospitality room.

I promised them they could be guests sometime this year, because they are retiring from their duties of catering to the hungry and thirsty. It won't be the same without them.

Margaret, 30, is married to this year's ECSC co-chairman, Kevin Merritt. The Chatham, Va., native recently opened her own speech pathology business. She has degrees from UNC and the University of Virginia.

Kelly, 30, is a 1982 Cox High graduate. She attended VCU and earned her masters from ODU. She is a teacher at Brandon Middle School.

Well, here you go, women, your big chance. Let's see what you've got.

First Colonial 24, Bayside 14: First Colonial has always had a strong team. Being a Cox fan, Kelly says she knows this first-hand.

Cox 28, Ocean Lakes 3: The women are going with the Falcons, because of Kelly's loyalty to her alma mater and because of Margaret's friendship with Kelly. Besides, they say, Ocean Lakes is a young team with little experience.

Green Run 17, Maury 14: Kelly did her student teaching at Green Run and this is the year for the Stallions. Margaret agrees, saying Kelly makes some strong points about Green Run having a bunch of good people returning.

Kellam 14, Norview 7: Margaret makes the call, adding that the Knights want to avenge last season - starting it by winning this close game by a touchdown.

Kempsville 24, Great Bridge 10: The women say that, based on last year's statistics, this is how they should pick this game.

Last week: 3-0 (Crystal Puckett).

Best pick: Tallwood 16, Great Bridge 10. Tallwood won, 14-3.

Worst pick: none.

Overall: 3-0. by CNB
