PERFECT PROGNOSTICATION DESERVES TO BE REPEATED

This football prediction business doesn't look so tough. In my first attempt, I was 3-for-3 - a perfect 100 percent.

Beginner's luck? Solid forecasting built upon a detailed analysis? Probably the former.

It also helps that if you pick the score and you are dozens of points off (see last week's Princess Anne vs. Ocean Lakes prediction), you still get credit for a right answer. Wouldn't it be great if life was like that? Come close and you get credit for a win. Oh well.

The high school football season gets into full swing this week.

Here are the predictions for the five Beach games:

First Colonial 21, Bayside 13: First Colonial will be strong again, fighting for the top spot in the Beach district with Green Run. They have a bevy of returning starters and several newcomers who should step in and make a contribution. But mostly the Patriots have Frank Webster, the dean of area coaches. Bayside has some question marks. The Marlins could jell as the season progresses, but they won't be ready for First Colonial by Friday night.

Cox 21, Ocean Lakes 6: Cox has a new coach, they face another rebuilding year and they lack experience. None of that should prevent the Falcons from flying high against the New Kids on the Block.

Green Run 35, Maury 14: The Stallions are a powerhouse, a consensus choice to win the district title. In their season- and home-opener, they should gallop past Maury.

Norview 14, Kellam 0: Things continue to look dark for the Knights, who last enjoyed a winning season in 1986. The fact that the Pilots didn't muster much offense in the opening loss to Indian River coupled with the Knights' stronger defense will keep the score close.

Kempsville 28, Great Bridge 6: The Chiefs look to 31 returning starters to lead them back to the upper tier of district football. The Wildcats, who lost to Tallwood at home last week, visit Kempsville. They will return to Chesapeake with their second consecutive loss to a Beach team.

Last week: 3-0.

Best pick: Tallwood 17, Great Bridge 7. Tallwood won, 14-3.

Worst pick: none.

Overall: 3-0. by CNB
