At this 30-year anniversary of the ``Freedom Summer'' movement in Mississippi, it is particularly significant that we remember the dedicated labor of volunteers from throughout America and, specifically, the ultimate sacrifice of civil- rights workers Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney, who paid with their lives to improve the African American's plight in the South.
It is ironic and egregious that leaders of our community such as Louis Farrakhan, Khalid Abdul Muhammad and the Nation of Islam choose to blame and accuse Jews of causing their problems when, in fact, the first two of those three civil-rights workers who were slain while fighting for the right of African Americans to vote, assemble, go to school, have medical care and live in peace were themselves Jewish. The Nation of Islam should be ashamed, and the local NAACP should be embarrassed for inviting those bigots here.
