DON'T BELIEVE NORTH'S PROMISES

You report that Oliver North did not lie under oath, but only misled the congressmen with little twists to avoid accuracy.

What about Oliver North's campaign statements?

``Reduce taxes; increase defense.''

``Reduce government; provide more service from government.''

``Reduce crime; have more guns available through less gun restriction.''

These chicken-in-every-pot promises are also meant to mislead and confuse, as is his ``get rid of the Washington insiders.'' That exhortation should lead the voter to Wilder or Coleman, not North.

If Virginia voters elect this New Yorker, who has a special understanding of the truth, then we can quote Pogo: ``We have met the enemy and he is us.''
