APPLICATIONS DUE FOR DISCOUNTED SCHOOL MEALS

Families qualifying for free and reduced-price meals in Dare County schools who have not already done so need to submit a new application to participate in the program for the 1994-95 school year, Nutrition Director Pat Fearing said Thursday.

``Students who qualified for the program last year are automatically eligible to participate the first 10 days of this school year,'' Fearing explained. ``After that, the family needs to submit a new application for this year.''

Today is the 10th school day.

National School Lunch and Breakfast programs allow eligible students to purchase meals at reduced prices, or, in some cases, at no charge. Dare County meal prices are:

Breakfast - 50 cents, students; $1, adults; 30 cents, reduced rate.

Lunch - $1.25, grades K-5; $1.50, grades 6-12; $2.50, adults; 40 cents, reduced rate. Extra milk is 30 cents per carton.

Application forms for the program have been sent home with a letter to students' parents or guardians. Applications need to be filled out and returned to the child's school. Additional applications are available in each cafeteria or from the school guidance office.

Participation is confidential. For more information about eligibility, or other aspects of the program, call Fearing at (919) 473-1151, ext. 226. by CNB
