HONORING A NORFOLK FIREMEDIC

ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by Paul Aiken

With firefighting gear turned in reverse to honor the missing man,

firefighters stand at attention, above, at Station No. 13 on Maple

Avenue in Norfolk as the engine carrying the casket of David M.

Laughlin Jr. passes by Thursday. Laughlin, a firemedic at Station

No. 16 on Camellia Road, died Sunday of cancer. As a firemedic, he

split 24-hour shifts between ambulance and fire engine duty. His

casket was lifted from the back of the fire engine he used to ride,

once it reached Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, by members of his fire

academy class and firefighters from his station. Laughlin's

ambulance also was in the procession.
