TOLL-FREE PHONES SOUGHT

The Dare County Board of Commissioners has been working to eliminate a barrier to telephone communication in our county. This barrier is the costly calling rates between Hatteras Island and the rest of Dare County.

The customers of Carolina Telephone have been mailed a ballot concerning a new toll-free dialing plan known as Extended Area Service. This plan will include a new rate structure for basic telephone service for both residential and business customers. Although the basic telephone rate will increase, the assessment of long-distance tolls for calls between exchanges north and south of Oregon Inlet will be eliminated. Under the EAS plan, the caller will simply dial the seven-digit number and speak as long as desired without the worry of ringing up a huge bill.

We need your help to change to EAS in Dare County. On behalf of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, I write to encourage you to return the ballot with a vote in favor of EAS. The current system of long-distance tolls must be eliminated. This is one issue where all the people of Dare County can come together to unite our county into one toll-free calling area.
