THE SUN IS SHINING FROM A NEW LOCATION IN DOWNTOWN SUFFOLK

The Sun is shining again on Main Street.

After more than a dozen years at Saratoga and Washington streets, The Virginian-Pilot and its twice-weekly community news section have moved to more spacious quarters.

Sure, the Sun covers the whole city, as well as the rest of Western Tidewater. But now, we're spreading sunshine from a new location, not far from the old one.

We're glad to be back on Main Street - where the Sun was started in 1976, when the newspaper's offices were about four blocks farther north.

We hope you'll find our new home just as convenient as the previous one, or maybe more so. You can find us at 157 N. Main Street, Suite B, in the former Leggett's store, just around the block from our former location.

On Friday, the newspaper's advertising, news and circulation departments closed while we moved, but we plan to reopen Monday in the new offices for business as usual.

When we began to consider relocating, newspaper officials made a commitment to stay in downtown Suffolk because we feel this is the business and professional center of the city.

Our offices occupy nearly half of the first floor of the building that previously housed Leggett's department store, which closed its downtown store in July 1992.

The building's new owners, Michael Haas and Benny Speight, have renovated the first floor and leased space to us and the Suffolk Community Health Center, which opened in mid-August.

The center's patient and visitor entrance is through the parking lot off Saratoga Street, while the newspaper's front door faces Main Street. We're easily accessible from the municipal parking lot across the street by crossing at the pedestrian-controlled traffic light.

The owners are also negotiating a lease with an eatery for a small portion of the front of the building next to the newspaper. And they hope to sign tenants soon for offices on the second floor.

Also, we have a new Suffolk editor: Don Naden, a veteran newsman who has been with The Virginian-Pilot for 10 years and whose most recent duties were in Norfolk with our business news department. He joins Advertising Manager John Ridenour, Circulation Manager Joe Brown and Editorial Page Editor John Pruitt in inviting you to come in and let us serve you - in our new digs.

Our mailing address is 157 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. But our telephone numbers are the same: 934-7550 from Suffolk, 562-3028 from Franklin and 238-3459 from Smithfield. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by JOHN H. SHEALLY II
