AIR SHOW KICKS OFF NEPTUNE FESTIVAL

Just when the American Music Festival ended and you thought all the excitement was over, along comes the 21st annual Neptune Festival.

Kicking off this weekend with the annual air show at Oceana Naval Air Station, the fall festival continues with events for all ages through Oct. 2.

The popular air show enters its second day today at Oceana from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gates open at 9 a.m.

Looking ahead to next weekend, festivalgoers can plan to head out to the Farmers Market at the corner of Landstown and Princess Anne roads Saturday.

There, folks will be able to try their hands at corn shucking, pig racing, hampster dashing and more.

Next Sunday, the athletically minded can try the grueling Sandman Triathlon set to start at 8 a.m. on Atlantic Avenue at 31st Street. You can pick up an entry package at Virginia Beach Middle School at 25th Street and Mediterranean Avenue on Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. The cost is $50.

Other festival highlights include Heritage Day Sept. 25 with ethnic foods, costumes and entertainment, and the Boardwalk celebration Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, which includes an arts and crafts show, parade, sandcastle classic, fireworks and musical offerings.
