UMPIRES START CLASS: Until a couple years ago, baseball umpires for the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association were a group of freelancers.

``We'd dress in dungarees or shorts,'' John Pierce said. ``But we decided to become more professional and give the kids better officiating.''

One of the first steps was forming the Western Tidewater Officials Association and Pierce has served as president for two years. Another big step was setting up an umpires' school.

Classes for this year's five-day school will be at Diamond Springs Park, 501 Kings Fork Rd., beginning Monday at 7 p.m. Richard ``Bullett'' Alexander will be the chief of six instructors.

Interested persons should contact Pierce at 925-6325 (work) or 539-8545 (home) or Bob Gillette at 539-1221 (work) or 539-7911 (home).

TENNIS TOURNEY SLATED: The Suffolk Tennis Association will have the annual men and women's local championships and the junior veteran men and women's local tournament at the Lake Meade Landing tennis complex, beginning Monday at 6 p.m.

Singles, doubles and mixed doubles will be played during the seven-day event. All divisions will have a second flight except the mixed doubles division in each age group.
