CORPORATE CUP TO KICK OFF SPORTS AT PEANUT FEST

The corporate cup competition will kick off the sports phase of the 1994 Peanut Fest at the Suffolk YMCA on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Established four years ago to promote community interest and involvement in fitness and health activities, the corporate cup encourages businesses to focus on having healthy employees. This is the second year that it has served as a kickoff event.

Teams consist of only six members and must include at least two men and two women. The squads compete in seven events: volleyball, running an obstacle course, basketball, a relay race, weight lifting, pool raft relay and tug of war.

The top team takes the treasured corporate cup trophy for a year. Officials also will award plaques.

A 5K run is slated for Oct. 1, starting at 5:15 p.m. The race will begin and end at Suffolk's Municipal Center, 440 Market St.

Check-in will start at 4 p.m., and runners will race along a scenic route through residential areas. Awards will be presented to the first three finishers in the men's and women's open divisions as well as the various age groups.

Cost of registration before Sept. 26 is $8. Those who register after Sept. 26 must pay $10. Each participant will receive a T-shirt.

A golf outing is slated for the Suffolk golf course Oct. 5, beginning with a shotgun start at noon. Registrants must provide their handicap or the scores of the last three 18-hole games.

Each entrant must pay $50, which includes greens fees, prizes, a social and dinner. Soft drinks and snacks will be available all day.

Prizes will go to first through sixth place in both the low gross and low net categories. However, low gross winners will not be eligible for low net awards.

A three-performance rodeo is set for the arena area at the fest site. Two shows are slated at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and one is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.

The McLamb Rodeo Company of Benson, N.C., will operate the event under the direction of Willis McLamb. His company has performed at shows in Virginia and North and South Carolina.

Experienced riders and ropers from those three states and Maryland are expected to compete for rodeo championship points. by CNB
