BOY LEADS POLICE ON HIGH-SPEED CHASE THAT ENDS IN WRECK

A 13-year-old boy who took his mother's car for a joy ride early Saturday morning led police in Virginia Beach and Norfolk on a high-speed chase through four cities that ended when the vehicle crashed in Ocean View.

The boy, who was treated for minor injuries and released from a nearby hospital, is being charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a felony, several counts of eluding police and reckless driving, Virginia Beach police said.

The boy, whose name was withheld by police because of his age, was released into his parent's custody after he was treated for scrapes and bruises.

The chase began at 4:17 a.m. when a Virginia Beach police officer tried to pull over a gray 1985 Honda Accord on Ferrell Parkway because of defective equipment, but the car wouldn't stop.

From the intersection of Indian Lakes Boulevard, officer J.R. Legg pursued the Honda down Ferrell Parkway to Indian River Road. He followed the car as it turned onto eastbound Interstate 64.

``This kid was scared to death,'' a police spokesman said. ``He'd stolen his mother's car.''

At speeds in excess of 100 mph, Legg pursued the Honda down I-64 into Chesapeake, past Great Bridge and Deep Creek. The car looped onto eastbound Interstate 264 and passed into Portsmouth, going through that city to the Downtown Tunnel and over the Berkley Bridge into downtown Norfolk.

Norfolk police took over the pursuit at 4:38 a.m. The Honda crashed two minutes later at the intersection of Granby Street and Tidewater Drive.

Norfolk police were unavailable for comment.

The boy was arrested at the scene. There was no alcohol involved in the accident, police said.
