Great Bridge's Eric Adams and Western Branch's Meredith Turnage paced their boys and girls teams to championships in the third annual Southeastern Invitational cross-country meet Saturday, setting new course records at Great Bridge.
Adams zipped over the 3.1-mile course in 16:01 minutes as the Great Bridge boys breezed to victory in a nine-team field. The Wildcats finished with 37 points. Runner-up Gloucester had 54 and third-place Churchland finished with 62.
Turnage was clocked in 18:43, 23 seconds below her winning time in last year's meet at Churchland.
Turnage expressed disappointment in ``the team's second-place finish'' and then was pleasantly surprised to learn Western Branch had won. Bruins coach Bill Volkman had miscounted the score, too.
Western Branch had 46 points, followed by Great Bridge with 50 and Maury with 58.

CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL: Carolyn Zanelli of Bayside and Brendan Rodgers of Paul VI captured individual titles in the Catholic Invitational cross country meet held Saturday at Mt. Trashmore.
Paul VI - a private school in Fairfax - retained its girls team title, but lost its boys to Thomas Jefferson of Richmond. Paul VI finished second in the boys team race.
In the first varsity race, Zanelli jumped out to an early lead.
Rodgers ran in a lead pack of about five runners until the 2-mile mark of the 3.1-mile course.
``When we got there, I just took off,'' he said. ``I think I can do much better than this.''
