NEWPORT NEWS SHOOTINGS LEAVE 2 DEAD, 1 INJURED

Three people were shot - two fatally - in two unrelated incidents on Sunday.

Two men have been charged with murder in one of the cases.

In the first shooting, two men were shot as they sleptin their home early Sunday by two intruders. The younger of the two victimsdied a few hours later, police said.

About 4:45 a.m., Pernell C. Harrell, 47, of the first block of Poplar Ave. walked into the Sheriff's Department offices at the city jail. He said he and his ``son'' had been shot. He had driven himself to the jail seeking help.

Paramedics were called and took Harrell to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated Sunday for two gunshot wounds.

A police officer who was at the jail obtaining a warrant called for backup and went to Harrell's home. Officers found Gary Ransome, 27, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Ransome also was taken to Riverside and then transferred by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance to the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He died at 8:55 a.m.

Police said Ransome was not Harrell's biological son.

Investigators declined to say where the bullets hit Harrell and Ransome.

Later Sunday, police arrested Rondrick Bowser Jr. and Walter G. Short, both 19 and both from the 100 block of Poplar Ave. Each man was charged with one count of murder, one count of maiming and two counts of using a gun while committing a felony.

Both were being held without bail Sunday at the city jail pending a court hearing today.

Police said they do not have a motive in the shootings of Harrell and Ransome.

As investigators were working on that case, another homicide was reported. About 7:45 a.m., police were called to Dozier Middle School off Industrial Park Drive where a couple out for a walk with their dog found a body near the school.

Police said Calvin Eugene Williams, 29, of the 800 block of Constance Drive had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Norfolk.

Williams' body was found about 75 yards from where his car was parked. Police said the engine was still running. The doors of the black, 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix were closed but unlocked.

Police would not disclose where the bullets hit Williams, but said it did not appear that he was running away at the time. Police have no suspects or motive.
