Once again, September is proving to be a prime month for fishing along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.
Some outstanding hauls of billfish have been recorded in the past few days. Most have been white marlin, but there have been some blues and sailfish as well.
Kitty Falk of Virginia Beach had one of the year's biggest Virginia fish, a blue estimated at more than 700 pounds, released Friday from the charter boat 04, skippered by Milton Sykes and sailing from the Virginia Beach Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet.
The High Hopes, a charter boat skippered by David Wright, had the season's top one-day Virginia billfish catch Thursday, releasing a blue marlin and seven whites. The boat sails from Fisherman's Wharf Marina at Rudee Inlet.
Elsewhere, big flounder were boated along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, several red drum were caught off the Eastern Shore bayside, and big sea mullet make a strong showing in the surf of the Outer Banks.
Glen Ouye of Centerville, Va., had one of the season's heaviest Virginia largemouth bass, a 10-pound, 13-ounce lunker caught on a plastic worm tossed into Lake Cohoon in Suffolk.
