President Clinton nominated Marine Gen. John J. Sheehan as the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Atlantic Command and NATO's supreme allied commander in the Atlantic.
Sheehan, upon confirmation by the Senate, will become the first Marine general to fill the slot, which in the past has been held by a Navy admiral. He will succeed Adm. Paul Miller in the position.
The nomination is a major promotion for Sheehan, who is the director for operations on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and has briefed reporters on military operations involving Haiti, Rwanda, and Cuba.
``Sheehan assumes the post of supreme allied commander Atlantic at a time when the U.S. is working closely with our NATO allies to forge new and important ties throughout the region,'' the White House said in a statement.
``I will look to General Sheehan to continue the innovative efforts of Admiral Miller in defining the role of allied military power in forging a safe and secure world,'' Clinton said in the statement.
