Social and economic forces caused the U.S. home-ownership rate to

decline during the 1980s for the first time in at least half a

century, the Census Bureau reported today.

Overall, the 1990 census found 64.2 percent of the nation's

households were owners, down from 64.4 percent in 1980.

Ownership for African-American households was 43.4 percent in

1990, down from 44.4 percent a decade earlier.

For Latino households, the 1990 rate was 42.4 percent, down from

43.3 percents.

For white households, the rate was 68.2 percent in 1990,

continuing a steady rise.

The rate for Asians and Pacific Islanders also was higher at

52.1, up from 51.4 percent.
