Edward Spalding Ferebee, 89, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died Monday, Sept. 12, 1994, in his residence.
Col. Ferebee was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late M.C. Ferebee and Nettie Spalding Ferebee. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1925 and Harvard Law School in 1928, where he was a member of the Editorial Board of Harvard Law Review. Following graduation from law school, Col. Ferebee returned to Norfolk, where he practiced law as a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and Virginia Bar Association. At the beginning of World War II, Col. Ferebee entered the U.S. Army Reserve and was assigned to the Judge Advocate General Corps where he served throughout the war in the Pacific theater. At the end of the war he returned to his law practice. Col. Ferebee was active in Norfolk civic community as president of the Norfolk Civitan Club, chairman of the Armed Services Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the boards of directors of Norfolk Goodwill Industries and Norfolk Seamen's Friend Society.
Col. Ferebee's church affiliations include Epworth United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Board of Stewards, president of the Wesleymen Bible Class, as well as a regular Sunday School teacher; Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he was a lay reader; and most recently Baylake United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Administrative Board.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Woodall Ferebee of Virginia Beach; a sister, Florence Ferebee Hasler of Virginia Beach; and three nieces.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 16, 1994 in Elmwood Cemetery at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Ted E. David. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
