Economic activity in the area improved slightly during midsummer as seen in the 1 percent increase in the Hampton Roads Economic Performance Index, according to a Virginia Wesleyan College study. Employment in the government sector rose, primarily because of seasonal variation, as well as finance, insurance, real estate, construction and mining. Wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, services, transportation, utilities and communications reported declines. The Virginia Economic Performance Index also showed a July rebound, but the state outperformed Hampton Roads and followed national economic trends. by CNB
