HONORS AND AWARDS

PATNESKY ELECTED: Edward J. Patnesky, president and chief executive officer of Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, was recently elected to the Council of Regents of the American College of Healthcare Executives during the college's 60th annual meeting in Dallas.

As a regent, Patnesky will represent the college's membership in Virginia.

Patnesky has served as president and CEO of Southampton Memorial Hospital since 1986. Previously, he served as the vice president of Professional Services at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.

He is a member of the Virginia Hospital Association, American Hospital Association, and the Health Care Administrators of Tidewater. He is past president of the Hampton Roads Regional Policy Council and the Franklin/Southampton Area United Way. He is also a former member of the Virginia Hospital Association Board of Directors.

Patnesky holds Fellow status in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the highest level of professional recognition, and is a licensed nursing home administrator.

SUMNER IN DENTAL PROGRAM: Dianna Hall Sumner has been accepted in the Dental Hygiene Program in Goldsboro, N.C.

She is a 1991 graduate of Murfreesboro Christian Center School, Murfreesboro, N.C.

Sumner and her husband, Christopher L. Sumner, live in Murfreesboro. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Hall of Eure, N.C.

ALLEN AT CONFERENCE: LeBonnie Allen, a teacher at Nansemond River High School, attended the recent Tri-State Co Ed Hi-Y Advisors Training Conference at YMCA Camp Horseshoe in Tucker County, W.Va.

Co Ed Hi-Y advisors for the states of Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia participated in the conference, receiving instruction on club organization, membership recruitment and orientation, school and community relations, discovering community needs, and public relations.

Other topics discussed were grant writing and the Washington Report, which gives statistics on the needs of youth across the country, as well as federal and state guidelines in those areas.

KIRK SELECTED: Joshua Kirk, a Nansemond River High School senior, has been selected to serve on the Virginia State YMCA Youth Council.

Kirk and Lakeshia Allen recently attended the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs at Black Mountain, N.C. They were part of a 28-student Virginia delegation, and they interacted with students from other states on issues of national concern.

HOLLAND ON BOARD: Janice Holland, principal of Elephant's Fork Elementary School, has been named to a two-year term on the board of directors of the Suffolk Chapter of the American Heart Association.

SCHOOLS EARN AWARDS: The following schools received safety awards during the Suffolk Public Schools' recent convocation.

John Yeates Middle School received the first annual award for its overall work in providing a safe environment for its students, staff and visitors.

Florence Bowser Elementary School received an award for being the only school in the city without a staff accident claim under workers' compensation.

Elephant's Fork Elementary and Robertson Elementary were awarded certificates of recognition for excellent workers' compensation safety records with only two accidents each.

John Yeates Middle School and John F. Kennedy Middle School received recognition for having no reportable student accidents.

John Yeates, Mount Zion Elementary and Oakland Elementary received recognition for 100 percent consistent preparation of site safety reports for the administrative safety committee.

LAW DEGREES FOR TWO: Gary David Bartel and Randy Janey, both of Suffolk, recently received Juris Doctor degrees from the T.C. Williams School of Law. MEMO: Thumbs Up is a page dedicated to the accomplishments and good deeds of
