JIM K. WYATT SR.

Jim Kiezel Wyatt Sr., 87, of Main St., died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1994, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital after suffering a heart attack.

A native of Portsmouth, Va., he was the last surviving of nine children of the late William Barnard and Mrs. Nannie Bayton Wyatt. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Tayloe Wyatt, who died Dec. 2, 1993.

A former timber and piling broker, he was the founder and president of J.K. Wyatt Trucking Company. A former town council member and mayor of Gatesville, he served on the board of directors of Tarheel Bank & Trust Co. from 1946 to 1986 and served as its president and chairman of the board from 1966 to 1986. He was a member of both the local and executive boards of directors of Southern Bank & Trust Co. since 1987. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Gatesville Masonic Lodge (NU)126, AF & AM; the Scottish Rite Bodies; and the Sudan Temple of the Shrine in New Bern. He was a former member of the Gatesville Ruritan Club. A sponsor and charter member of the Alton Turner-Gates Co. Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, he was a longtime landowner in the Grandy section of Currituck County, where he maintained a private hunting lodge. An avid sportsman and duck hunter, he enjoyed the comraderie of friends on his many trips to his lodge. He was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church and was a former superintendent of Sunday School.

Surviving are one daughter, Nan Wyatt Knorr of Southern Pines; one son, Jim Wyatt Jr. of Henderson; four grandchildren, Jim K. Wyatt III of Raleigh, William Mitchell Wyatt of Wilmington, Natalie Elizabeth Knorr of Chapel Hill and Caroline Tayloe Knorr of Southern Pines; a brother-in-law, James M. Tayloe of Bristol, Tenn.; a niece, Nancy McCloud Daugherty of Savannah, Ga.; and a nephew, Wyatt Thompson of Vero Beach, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gatesville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Laura Early. Burial will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gatesville United Methodist Church or to the Gates County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
