A judge on Wednesday ordered Shaheen Malkamy, the former Old Dominion University student charged with stabbing his calculus instructor, to undergo treatment at a state mental hospital.
General District Judge Charles R. Cloud issued an order sending Malkamy, 21, to Central State Hospital, where doctors will try to restore him to competency and determine his sanity at the time of the alleged offense.
Malkamy apparently attempted suicide in Virginia Beach on Aug. 10, the date of his last court hearing. A doctor evaluated him, found him incompetent to stand trial and recommended that he be sent to a hospital. Instead, Malkamy was sent to the Norfolk jail.
Malkamy is charged with malicious wounding for allegedly stabbing his math instructor, Carl Panetta, in the shoulder on July 7 during class. No motive has been given.
He also faces additional charges for allegedly assaulting two sheriff's deputies while in jail.
On the day of the attack, students said, they saw Malkamy reach into his yellow school bag several times during class before pulling out what they described as a steak knife.
