A woman was believed to have been abducted Wednesday morning from her office in a Signet Bank building in the 6300 block of Newtown Road, the same place another woman was abducted from earlier this month.
The missing woman was identified by police as Sally Lipmanson, 52, of the 1000 block of Cypress Point Way in Virginia Beach. She was last seen at her desk at the Publishers Service Co. on the first floor about 7:15 a.m., police said.
But by 7:30 a.m., when the office manager arrived, Lipmanson had disappeared, police said. Her car was found in the parking lot, and her personal belongings were at her desk.
``We obviously expect foul play because of the strangeness of the incident,'' said Norfolk police Sgt. Wayne McBride. ``It was apparent that the woman was going about her normal routine and then just vanished.''
On Sept. 1, a 35-year-old Virginia Beach woman was abducted at gunpoint at about 4 p.m. as she left the bank building after meeting with a lawyer, McBride said.
She was forced to drive her car to the 3800 block of Muddy Creek Road in the Pungo section of Virginia Beach and was raped, the officer said.
The suspect in that case is described as a medium-brown-skinned black man, between 35 and 40 years old. He weighed an estimated 170 to 180 pounds, and had hazel eyes and 4-inch dreadlocks.
The two cases seem unrelated, police said.
``The only similarity is that the two incidents originated in the same place,'' McBride said.
A spokeswoman for Publishers Service Co. said she didn't know what to make of the woman's disappearance.
``We're very upset, of course. We just have no idea exactly what has happened,'' said general manager Ellen Henderson.
Lipmanson was last seen wearing a white shirt and dark pants, police say. They are asking anyone with information about the disappearance to call the Sexual Assault Section at 441-5546. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
