Transportation accidents accounted for nearly half of the 133 fatal on-the-job injuries in Virginia in 1993, according to a report released Wednesday by the state's Department of Labor and Industry. In 1993, as in 1992, 65 people were killed in transportation accidents, which included 30 deaths due to highway accidents and 11 workers struck by vehicles, among other fatalities. The Norfolk-Virginia Beach metropolitan area had 22 work-related deaths, the most in the state, followed by Richmond's 15 deaths. Statewide, 11 people died as a result of shootings at work.
