NO. 2 JMU EMERGES AS FIELD HOCKEY POWER

For the first time, James Madison has replaced Old Dominion as the field hockey leader in the Colonial Athletic Association.

After a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Penn State and a 2-1 overtime/shootout home victory over ODU, the Dukes (3-0-1) moved up to a tie for second with Northwestern (3-0-1) in the latest NCAA Division I rankings - the highest national ranking ever for a JMU team.

The Lady Monarchs (2-1) dropped from No. 2 to an eighth-place tie with Ball State (2-1-1).

Three former Virginia Beach athletes - senior forward Eileen Arnaldo from Kempsville High and junior defender Heather Hoehlein and sophomore midfielder/forward Kelly McDonald, both from Cox - are key players for the Dukes.

The JMU-ODU game was decided on penalty strokes in a shootout after two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, with Hoehlein connecting on the decisive score.

TRIBE REPORT: Four William and Mary teams are ranked nationally: Tribe squads are No. 8 in football and women's soccer, No. 11 in men's soccer and No. 21 in cross country. . . . The Tribe now has 11 teams competing in the fall, including six women's teams. . . . Men's soccer goalie Paul Grafer and Natalie Neaton, a forward on the women's team, were named to Soccer America magazine's Teams of the Week. Grafer has not allowed a goal in the Tribe's three games this year. Neaton scored three goals in an overtime loss to Notre Dame. She is tied for fifth nationally in total points with 13. . . . Whitney Cali, a freshman from Green Run, has been named to the women's under-20 national soccer team. Cali, a first team All-Tidewater and the Beach District player of the year, has three goals in three games. She had 22 goals and six assists in 11 games at Green Run last season.

ODAC FOOTBALL: Hampden-Sydney sophomore flanker Preston Montague is the Old Dominion Athletic Conference offensive player of the week. He tied a school record with 10 pass receptions for 148 yards in the Tigers' season-opening 26-9 loss to Muhlenberg. . . . Defensive honors went to Emory & Henry senior linebacker John Luttrell, who had nine tackles, forced two fumbles, intercepted a pass and sacked the quarterback once in a 23-2 rout of Washington & Lee. . . . Randolph-Macon, defending champion and preseason No. 1, makes its 1994 debut at Catholic University on Saturday. . . . Just how young is Bridgewater's squad? Fifty-seven of the 66 players are either freshmen or sophomores.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN SOCCER: Forward Jim Hickling, a junior from Kempsville High, is the ODAC's soccer player of the week. He scored five goals and recorded an assist as the Marlins (4-0) swept to consecutive 7-0 victories over Tusculum and Stevens Tech in the Mary Washington Classic over the weekend. Hickling has seven goals and two assists this season. . . . Mike Duffy moved into second on the Marlins' all-time scoring list with the first of his two goals against Tusculum. He now has 33 career goals. Mike McFarland leads with 50. . . . In a clash of top-ranked teams in the South Region, Virginia Wesleyan will host Mary Washington at 4 p.m. today. ``This team is shaping up as the best I've had at Virginia Wesleyan,'' says coach Sonny Travis.

ALL ABOUT ODU: The Monarchs' sailing programs opened strongly last weekend. Sophomore John Torgerson placed first in the Laser Opener at the Naval Academy, and the Monarchs as team won the Riley Cup, held at ODU. Torgerson won the Laser regatta by four points and in doing so qualified for the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association singlehanded championship, to be held Oct. 29-30 at St. Mary's College in Maryland. . . . In cross country, senior Christina Barr placed fourth in the William and Mary Open. Barr posted a time of 15:15 for the 2.5-mile course. Freshman Julie Ball placed 18th in 16:25, and junior Stacey Chyz took 19th in 16:33. . . . In soccer, junior foward Gene Bowman (First Colonial) scored two goals in ODU's 4-1 victory over East Carolina, the second time in two years he has accomplished that feat. Last year, he did it against Washington. . . . Michele Kubicek scored two goals against ECU to become the first Lady Monarchs soccer player to score two goals in a match.

HERE AND THERE: midfielder Angela Young, a Salem grad, scored a goal and striker Amy Rosenbaum (First Colonial) netted her second collegiate goal as Alabama's women's soccer team defeated Georgia Southern, 4-1. . . .
