TTCS Clarence L. ``Tony'' Gibbs Sr., USCG (Ret.), 60, died Sept. 14, 1994 in his residence.
He was born in Manns Harbor, N.C., and was a member of Deep Creek United Methodist Church. He retired in 1980 from the USCG as a senior chief telephone technician after 23 years of service and from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after six years. He had previously served in the Navy for four years before entering the Coast Guard. A veteran of the Korean War, he served his country with pride, honor and dedication. He loved his military family. He was a member of the Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge (NU)178; Scottish Rite Bodies; Miriam Chapter Order of Eastern Star; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 993; American Legion (NU)0288; and Chief Petty Officers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Connie J. Gibbs; two sons, Clarence L. Gibbs Jr. of Highlands, N.C. and James L. Gibbs of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Beverly Dunkel of Portsmouth; two stepchildren in Greenville, N.C.; four sisters, the Rev. Bess Hunnings of Durham, N.C., Inez G. Gibbs, Jennie Creef and Margaret Gard, all of Manns Harbor; a brother, Robert W. Gibbs of Derry, N.H.; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by a faithful canine friend, Nick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman O. and Bertha T. Gibbs and three brothers, Samuel O. Gibbs, William Gibbs and Herman O. Gibbs Jr.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, by the Rev. Bradford L. Phillips and the Rev. Bess Hunnings. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Manns Harbor, N.C. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home Saturday following the funeral service. The family will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Manns Harbor, N.C., or the American Cancer Society.
He loved home and family and open heartedly gave a helping hand to those who were in need.
