Old Dominion's women's soccer team turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and had chance after chance to score, but in the end couldn't put the ball in the back of the net, suffering a 2-1 loss Thursday to the U.S. Naval Academy, the Monarchs' first home loss.
``That's the nature of this game,'' said Old Dominion coach Linda Hamilton. ``Luck plays a big part, just like skill and athletic ability.''
The Monarchs (2-2) had an excellent opportunity to take the lead in the first half when freshman midfielder Michele Kubicek directed a shot past Amy Hakola. The ball skidded towards the open goal, but defender Lisa Gibellato got back to knock it wide.
Navy (2-3) took the lead with 3:04 left in the first half on a misplayed cross by Old Dominion goalie Pam Dennis.
Cori Thornton directed the ball across the goal, and Dennis got a hand on it before letting it slip out in front where Patty Despain was waiting to kick the ball home.
Navy went ahead 2-0 at the 36:19 mark of the second half. Thornton burned the Monarchs with her speed, splitting two defenders and beating Dennis on a shot just beneath the crossbar.
Old Dominion ruined the shutout with 16:34 left to play when Jennifer Gillespie beat Hakola with a shot into the left corner of the goal. by CNB
