PHOTOS HIGHLIGHT HISTORY OF CHOWAN FAMILIES SUBMITTED WORK FOR THE EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY TODAY.

About 250 photographs chronicling Chowan County history will be on permanent display after a ribbon cutting today.

``A Century of Chowan through Photographs'' opens to the public at 10 a.m. at the Swain Auditorium off Route 17 Business.

About 150 local families submitted about 1,000 photos to be considered for the exhibit, which grew out of a 1992 photo show by the Chowan Arts Council, located in the building's basement.

``We felt like that it would be a gift to the community, that it would add variety to the tour of Edenton,'' said Ann Perry, the arts council's executive director.

The council worked with Museum of the Albemarle officials to put the mini-museum together at a cost of more than $40,000, Perry said.

The exhibit's largest photo, a 1920s-era picture of the Hayes Plantation, covers the entire entrance wall. Other photos range in size from 8-by-10 inches to 4-by-8 feet, Perry said.

Each of ten walls will cover a different aspect of the county's history: agriculture, business, the waterfront, transportation, people, homes, church, schools, the military and the community.

In conjunction with the exhibit's opening, the arts council is presenting ``100 Years of the Chowan Herald.'' Fifty mounted pages of the community's weekly newspaper will be on display in the arts council's facility for eight weeks before becoming part of the permanent exhibit in the building's foyer.

Corporate donors to the project included Centura Bank, BB&T, NationsBank, Southern Bank and Sprint/Carolina Telephone, Perry said. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
