RURITAN BARBECUE PLANNED FOR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

For nearly 20 years, it has been a fall tradition in Chesapeake.

This tradition usually takes about a ton of beef slowly marinated and cooked over hundreds of white hot coals.

Add about 80 gallons of baked beans, 50 gallons of fresh cut slaw, 200 dozen rolls and enough beverages to float a boat, mix well with friends and family and you've got the 19th annual Deep Creek Ruritan Beef Barbeque.

The event takes place from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Izaak Walton Park off of Shipyard Road.

``We'll have road signs along Cedar Road and Shipyard Road pointing the way to the barbecue,'' said Deep Creek Ruritan publicity chairman Mike Kirsch. ``The park is down a dirt road, but the E.V. Williams Co. will donate its time to grade the road and make it easy for people to come to the barbecue.''

In the past, the barbecue has been held at various other Chesapeake sites including the Volvo Plant off of Volvo Parkway. But now Deep Creek Ruritan officials are pleased with the event's present site in Deep Creek.

``We feel it's easier and homier to keep it in our own neighborhood,'' Kirsch said.

Kirsch said there will be tents set up for people to dine out of the sun, or rain, and a huge portable stage will be set up to feature the sounds of 17 South, a popular Deep Creek band led by local Ronnie Dellinger. The group is scheduled to offer an array of top-40, country and rock sounds, Kirsch said.

This year's feast is expected to draw about 1,500 people, Kirsch said. Diners will be able to eat beef barbecue, hush puppies, coleslaw, rolls, baked beans and various beverages and soft drinks. And for those desiring something other than barbecue, Long's Deli will make its famous chili available at a booth.

Along with the food and live music, the event will feature informational displays about the event's many sponsoring companies and a sneak peek at the new 1995 car models thanks to Bill Lewis Chevrolet and Starr Motors.

In addition, there will be a host of carnival games to entertain the adult as well of younger patrons.

Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the Deep Creek Ruritans' community service projects including the building of wheelchair ramps, maintaining and managing a food pantry at the Deep Creek Methodist Church, offering scholarships to Deep Creek High School graduates, assisting youth recreation leagues and veterans at the Hampton Veterans Administration Hospital as well as supporting and participating in Meals On Wheels, Clean the Bay Day and the American Heart Association's Cardiac Arrest.

Kirsch said the Ruritans are delighted with the support and sponsorship provided by local businesses.

``It really helps us to have these sponsors,'' Kirsch said. ``That means we have that much more money going to our many community service projects.''

``Everybody I've talked to is looking forward to the barbecue,'' Kirsch. ``It's definitely a traditional Chesapeake fall event.'' ILLUSTRATION: AT A GLANCE
