The Suffolk Youth Athletic Association has started its soccer season and games will be played at Diamond Springs Park on King's Fork Road every Saturday until Nov. 19 when the end-of-season tournament begins.
Practice sessions run Monday through Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., and some 400 youngsters are participating in five levels of play, according to Stella Payne, who with her husband, Geoff, serves the association as a soccer commissioner.
The association and YMCA sponsored a soccer camp last month and many more youngsters showed up than had registered. But officials are hoping to have it again next year and will increase the staff to accommodate more participants.
There were good turnouts for both the coaches' clinic and the referees' clinic, Payne said.
SUFFOLK SHOOTER SELECTED: Butch Achterhof of Suffolk has been elected statistician of the Norfolk County Rifle Range's fall indoor pistol league. An electronics technician first class in the Navy, he is stationed at the Fleet Training Command in Norfolk.
Fred Vanderslice of Virginia Beach is the president and Bob Spainhour of Norfolk is the secretary-treasurer. Vanderslice, who replaces Ken Clark of Carrsville, said there were several shooters from Western Tidewater.
The 10-team league will start Tuesday with two weeks of practice and training for new shooters before beginning formal competition Oct. 4. Each shooter will fire once a week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., to complete the nine-week round-robin competition.
The Norfolk County Rifle Range Experts have dominated the league in years past, and there are several teams that still have openings. Anyone interested in shooting should call Vanderslice at 467-6662 (home) or 444-1648 (work).
Interested persons can also show up at the indoor range, 4321 S. Military Highway in the Bowers Hill section of Chesapeake, on Tuesday evenings. The league is National Rifle Association registered and firing counts toward NRA classification for competition.
The 60-shot course of fire consists of two national match 30-shot courses, utilizing a .22-caliber rimfire and a centerfire, which is for firearms .32 caliber or larger. Typical automatics are the Ruger Mark II and the Colt 1911 Cal. 45, but several military teams use their service M9 9mm Beretta pistols.
TENNIS TOURNEY SLATED: Artistry Concepts and the Suffolk Tennis Association will have a tennis tournament to benefit the Suffolk Rescue Squad at Lake Meade Landing tennis complex Sept. 24, beginning at noon. Competition will be for men only in singles and doubles competition.
